Use MCP-compliant tools in agent workflows

MC1471573 confirms that agent workflows in Copilot Studio can call MCP-compliant tools directly, passing structured inputs and consuming structured outputs, which puts deterministic orchestration around agent-extensible capabilities. The same MCP server can be reused across multiple agents and workflows without building a custom connector, and MCP tools run under existing workflow governance, monitoring and lifecycle management. The capability reached GA on 2026-07-15; this Message Center post is the tenant notification and needs no admin action.

Why it matters: one MCP server can now back both agents and workflows, so a customer integration built once stops needing a parallel custom connector on the workflow side.

Brand Kit and Skills in Copilot in PowerPoint

Brand Kit gives Copilot an organization's approved templates, imagery, icons and fonts, with a strict brand adherence mode that limits Copilot to approved template layouts and slide masters so it cannot create new layouts or alter placeholders. Skills package multi-step workflows into reusable capabilities: @Prepare for Questions, @Review Presentation and @Visualize Slide ship prebuilt, users can author personal Skills, and admins can publish approved Skills to users, groups or the whole organization. MC1470415 adds notes steering, letting Brand Managers put instructions in template speaker notes to steer slide inclusion, content preservation and audience. Both are "generally available today with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license".

Why it matters: brand-compliant deck generation is one of the few Copilot asks that survives a procurement review intact, and Skills give a partner a packaging unit to sell beyond one-off prompts.

Prompt input on the Copilot button in Word, Excel and PowerPoint

MC1470885 puts a prompt box on the Copilot button itself, so users can type or dictate a request and reference Microsoft 365 content without opening the full Copilot pane. Contextual inputs appear when content is selected in Word or PowerPoint, suggested actions such as Rewrite and Shorten surface when applicable, and the shortcuts are Alt + C on Windows and Command + Control + I on Mac. Covers Word, Excel and PowerPoint on Windows desktop, macOS and web. General Availability (Worldwide) begins September 2026 and is expected to complete by the end of December 2026, enabled by default for eligible users with no separate admin control.

Why it matters: a four-month rollout with no admin toggle means the entry point shifts under users mid-adoption, so training material showing the old button needs a planned refresh.

Microsoft Copilot Cost Management September updates

MC1470425 lands six admin center changes: spending policies can auto-apply to newly released UBB Copilot services and agents, admins can set email alerts when users approach spending limits, consumption dashboards open to the AI Reader and Global Reader roles, reporting gains Prepaid and Pay-as-you-Go credit visibility plus capacity pack breakdowns, custom request policies can route Cowork credit requests to alternate approvers, and user consumption carries forward when a user moves between policies. The "Auto-apply new services setting is enabled by default for all spending policies". Rollout began early September 2026.

Why it matters: auto-apply is on by default, so a tenant with a capped spending policy silently extends that cap to Copilot services it has not evaluated yet.

Review PDFs with the Copilot context menu on OneDrive for iOS

MC1470417: selecting text in a PDF in the OneDrive iOS app surfaces an Ask Copilot context menu that can explain, summarize, translate or answer questions about the content. Rollout runs late September through late October 2026 across Worldwide, GCC, GCC High and DoD.

Why it matters: GCC High and DoD coverage at launch is unusual for a mobile Copilot surface and worth raising with public-sector customers who normally wait months for parity.

User.ReadBasic.All stops returning app role assignments and license details

MC1470871: Microsoft is correcting a security vulnerability in Microsoft Graph where User.ReadBasic.All granted unintended access to user app role assignments and license details, and is restricting the permission to a limited set of basic user profile properties. Apps reading app role assignments need User.Read.All, apps reading license details need LicenseAssignment.Read.All, and apps reading both need User.Read.All. Rollout runs mid-September to late September 2026, Worldwide.

Why it matters: this is a silent breaking change on a two-week runway, so any provisioning, licensing-report or governance app consented only to User.ReadBasic.All fails this month and needs fresh admin consent.

Queues app collaborative calling

Shared call history in the Queues app is now generally available, giving every queue member, or a restricted set of users, one view of missed, incoming and outgoing calls plus voicemails. Calls can be marked Unresolved, In progress or Resolved, reporting history extends from 30 to 45 days, authorized users can manage queue settings inside Teams, and agents can work queues and return calls from Teams mobile. Requires Microsoft Teams Premium. Organizations averaging more than 10 monthly active call queue members between April and June 2026 can take a 90-day Teams Premium trial, with 50% discount eligibility on a one-year subscription if usage thresholds are met.

Why it matters: this makes Queues a credible first-line option for a small contact-center deployment, and the trial plus discount is a concrete commercial motion into Teams Premium.

Enhanced real-time alerting rule management in the Teams admin center

MC1470901: real-time alerting rules in the Teams admin center gain rule duplication, bulk user upload when creating or editing a rule, and deletion directly from the management view, for the In-Progress Meetings and Calls rule types. Rules can monitor up to 500 users. GA begins late September 2026 Worldwide, enabled by default.

Why it matters: bulk upload and a 500-user ceiling make real-time alerting usable across a whole support organization rather than a pilot group.

Personal message reminders in chat and channels

MC1470887: users can set, update, complete and delete personal reminders on any chat or channel message. Targeted Release lands early October 2026, with general availability in October 2026 across Worldwide, GCC, GCC High and DoD.

Why it matters: reminders reach every government cloud on the same schedule as commercial, which is rare enough to raise with public-sector customers directly.

Report suspicious guest invitations

Roadmap 571297, added 2026-09-14: Teams users will be able to report an unexpected or potentially malicious guest invitation to their IT admin for review, to help identify and mitigate phishing and other abuse through guest invitations. Listed as In development, Targeted Release then General Availability, Worldwide (Standard Multi-Tenant), Desktop, with a stated GA date of November CY2026.

Why it matters: guest-invite phishing has no in-product report path today, so tenants currently cover it with user training alone.

Anchored comments in the PDF viewer

MC1470416: the PDF viewer in OneDrive and SharePoint on the web gains comments attached to a specific location on a page, with replies, @mentions and a visual anchor. Rollout runs mid-October through mid-November 2026 across Worldwide, GCC, GCC High and DoD.

Why it matters: PDF review currently leaves SharePoint for a third-party tool, and anchored comments remove the main reason customers buy one.

Minimize email drafts on Outlook for iPad

MC1470883: Outlook for iOS on iPad can compose mail in a new window and minimize a draft to return to it later, with behaviour depending on how iPadOS multitasking is configured on the device. Rollout runs mid-September through mid-October 2026.

Why it matters: iPad was the last Outlook surface forcing a single-draft workflow, which mattered for field and frontline users composing long mail between tasks.

New left navigation controls in Viva Engage

MC1470424: the Viva Engage left navigation can be collapsed and resized, and the favorites cap of 10 is removed entirely, with drag reordering. Preferences persist per user across Viva Engage on the web, in Teams and in Outlook. No admin configuration is required.

Why it matters: the 10-favorite cap was a standing complaint in large communities, and removing it makes Engage navigable for users who follow dozens of communities.

eDiscovery can target user-owned SharePoint Embedded containers

MC1470884: Purview eDiscovery case setup can select user-owned SharePoint Embedded containers as a data source, which covers Loop content, Copilot Pages and Copilot Notebooks. Public preview runs mid-September to late September 2026, with general availability mid-October to late October 2026, Worldwide.

Why it matters: Copilot Pages and Notebooks have been accumulating business content with no clean eDiscovery path, and legal teams raise exactly that as a blocker to wider Copilot rollout.

Edge for Business DLP unmanaged app protection drops its pay-as-you-go requirement

MC1470881: Purview DLP policies protecting unmanaged cloud apps in Microsoft Edge for Business no longer require an Azure billing subscription as a prerequisite. Progressive rollout begins mid-October and completes late October 2026, Worldwide.

Why it matters: the Azure billing prerequisite was the main reason E5 customers left this control switched off, so expect it to become a standard ask in DLP designs.
